Hi!

I'm, again, taking off from Estonia and away for a week or so. I'm going to Lithuania, but I doubt I have any free time to take pictures there. Until then enjoy some new pictures from Estonia. I had a great opportunity to go and see MAKI's new collection, which is great, at Nu Nordik and after that I went to see Aldo Järvsoo's, Riina Põldroos' and Oksana Tandit's collaboration at Art&Lights Design Night. Nice to see that Estonian fashion scene is improving so quickly!

Merilin,
Art&Lights Design Night at Hobuveski, Tallinn

I work as a stylist at Team Nihilist’s shop, so today I’m wearing a dress from there. This belt comes from a second-hand. My style is ever-changing. Some friends complain that they find it hard to recognize me, because I always look so different. I really like Aldo Järvsoo’s designs and this fashion show was great. His designs are bit too glam to just wear on streets, but I’m definitely planning to get some soon.

Jana,
Art&Lights Design Night at Hobuveski, Tallinn

I’ve had my own style for very long time and I rarely get inspiration from other people, but as I work in fashion business, I still keep up with the latest trends. I like the idea of using more grey shades and I combine it with my other favourites - brown and black. Estonian girls always look very put together and this is what I really like about local street style. People actually pay attention on what they are wearing.

Margit and Indrek,
Art&Lights Design Night at Hobuveski, Tallinn

Indrek: People need to wear more colour! It is plain darkness in Estonia for half of the year, so wearing black clothes makes the place even more depressing. Another thing I like is wearing Converse sneakers. They look great with almost everything. I usually wear hats too, but for some reason I haven’t got one today.
Margit: I disagree with Indrek and I love wearing black and dark clothes. Today I’m wearing mainly Monton and I believe in supporting local designers and fashion houses. I’m a passionate reader of style.com and get many ideas from there. This autumn everyone is piling grey clothes, so I might try that trend too.

Riina,
Art&Lights Design Night at Hobuveski, Tallinn

I’ve always liked to combine black with other colours. For the past couple of months I’ve been really busy and haven’t had much time to focus on my personal style. Therefore I’m not sure what I’d like to try this autumn. I have focused more on designing clothes for other people, and inspiration mainly comes from the textiles I use. I think street style in Estonia is very different from what Estonian designers create. I’m not sure whether it is good or bad.

Helina,
MAKI’s collection at Nu Nordik, Tallinn

People look more stylish, when they have more free time in their hands. It takes time to earn money for nice clothes, but also for putting together great outfits. My current favourites are purple and yellow colour. I just got a yellow coat for this autumn. Although I love black, I want to wear something more colourful. I’m here with my lovely dog Coco. Everybody thinks she was named after Coco Chanel, but actually I had a coconut in mind.

Daria and Madli,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

The best second-hands in Estonia are in Kohila and in other small towns. You can get really unique and cheap clothes from second-hands and therefore we usually shop there. We listen to all kinds of different music styles and in fashion we combine different looks. Estonian street style is changing all the time, but people still look the same. First there were hip-hop followers, then punk-rock and emo and so on. People, who don’t have their own style, adapt whatever is mainstream.

Fiona,
New York City, USA

In my family everyone had very distinct style, for example my sister is into rockabilly, while my mother is very sophisticated, my own style is a mixture of everything. My current style icon is Agyness Deyn, she has a great quirky style. In New York people try to be more extravagant than others, while in most of the places everybody follow just one trend and this makes New York one of the fashion capitals.

Joy,
New York City, USA

I’m originally from NY, but at the moment I live in Paris. I like New York’s style better, because there are more different styles. In Paris people look the same and wear too much black. My current favourite colours are grey and mustard. I think this fall’s colours are great! I’m trying to find some neat ankle boots. These shoes are by Dries van Noten.

Raul,
New York City, USA

My style is all the way Gay’n’Ghetto. I have my own label called Hood by Air and you can get it from Seven in New York. So if I want something, I just design it. New York’s style isn’t anymore what it used to be. Everyone seems to look the same and have lost their uniqueness. Nothing very innovative.

Othello,
New York City, USA

I like skater style and just pick up ideas from people I see. Street style is quite influential. I wear a lot of vintage and I prefer more plain clothes combined with something interesting. One’s style is a form of expression and a way of showing your personality, luckily everybody in NY has one and therefore street style here is great.

Hye,
New York City, USA

I think New York’s style is an inspiring mixture of everything. Another great style inspiration is the editor-in-chief of Paris Vogue Carine Roitfeld. My current favourites are oversize balloon-shaped dresses. The dress I’m wearing is by one Japanese designer. I’d like to buy some new Oxford shoes.

Patrick,
New York City, USA

Italian new-wave cinema and film directors like Fellini have had a great influence on my style. I prefer plain and simple things with value. Most of clothes are from A.P.C. or vintage. Fashion in New York is in dead phase. High street has commercialized fashion and everybody look the same. I’m hoping for a rebirth of 70’s punk rock scene, Puerto Rican hip-hop and things like that.

Eilian,
New York City, USA

My style icons are Kate Moss and Brigitte Bardot, and my own style is a combination of their style and everything British, because I’m from London. I also think that Marni is great for ideas. I’ve always loved wearing grey, so this season it is perfect. I like grey in all shades. I get my clothes from here and there and currently I like to raid my family members’ closets- this jumper used to belong to my grandfather and skirt to my mom.

Eric,
New York City, USA

I like clothes that won’t lose their value. I’ve got quite a lot of designer clothes, but also vintage. Today I’m wearing Ksubi jeans, because my wife is Australian, and this shirt is by Marc Jacobs. My newest purchase are these glasses. Life changes, people change and therefore it is logical that fashion and personal style changes. It develops as the person develops.

Reykjavik’s street style

Hi! I spent two great weeks in Reykjavik and New York. Both cities have great street styles and luckily I managed to get some photos for you too. I was amazed that although Reykjavik is a tiny city, it had so many stylish people and so many great shops! You should definitely go and check that place out.

Ave

AC and Saga,
Reykjavik, Iceland

AC: Everything concerning my style comes from my head. You need to know about the old-school stuff, because everything is repeating itself. Some said that 90’s won’t come back, but they already have. At the moment I’m into big golden chains and crazy looks. Local climate also dictates Icelanders style – if you have about 9 months of darkness, you need to be more expressive with your style.
Saga: I’m a photographer and fashion plays a big part in it. I tend to wear a lot of vintage, also today, but this coat is new and by Hendrik Vibskov. We like to set trends not follow them. I'm doing a street style blog in Reykjavik too.

Lilja Hrönn,
Reykjavik, Iceland

My favourite colour has to be red. I have many clothes in red and I think today it is actually pretty obvious. I’m also a shoe-addict. My current favourites are the ones I’m wearing. I got them from Nordstrom. I admire people who don’t wear whatever is in at the moment and go for something new and different. I try to go at least once a year abroad and I do a lot of shopping there.

delaRósa,
Reykjavik, Iceland

Kron kron is definitely my favourite shop in Reykjavik, but I also buy a lot from high street. Reykjavik had a vintage phase, but now it is over, though, these boots are vintage. If I still want something old-school, I go to Sputnik - only great vintage shop here. I always try to wear something red, today the bag. I also like wearing clothes designed by my friends, for example this scarf, his collection was really successful and he is already making a new one.

Bára,
Reykjavik, Iceland

I usually don’t wear so much black, but today the weather dictated that. Local fashion scene here in Reykjavik has been improving incredibly fast. People are really brave and experiment a lot. There are many designer shops here, but I prefer to mix them with high street.

Omar,
Reykjavik, Iceland

I work at Sputnik and my co-workers there and friends are all really stylish. This definitely affects my own style too. I wear a lot of vintage, but I’m currently looking for new cool sneakers. I think Icelanders want to feel comfortable, yet always have their own style. People here are really into fashion and like to know what is happening, but in the end just combine it with their own style.

Marta,
Reykjavik, Iceland

There are many great shops in Reykjavik. Some of my favourites include Kron kron, Naked Ape, Rokk and Rósir and Gullti Kötturinn. My style is rather eccentric and it is essential to wear a lot of colour and preferably different. One of my style idols is myspace’s celebrity Raquel Reed, she always has crazy hairstyles.

I’m away for the next couple of weeks, so no updates. I’m sorry. But I do hope that I can take some pictures during my holiday!

Polina,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

I’m a big fan of Peter Pan’s idea of never growing up. My clothes tend to be colourful, bit childlike and I like cropped jackets, because they reinforce the idea of still being a child. I like to shop at second-hands and I’m really happy that many Estonians do that. Not only you will have more unique clothes, they also carry some story inside. Next thing I’d like to buy is a purple scarf, similar to the one that the Pope wears.

Grete,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

I usually wear a lot more colour, I don’t have any favourites and I mix them all, but today I have ended up with black overshadowing everything else. I don’t have any favourite designers or object of desire, but if I had to choose something, I would say that I do like a nice watch. Sometimes I read fashion magazines, but there isn’t any particular one

Mirja,
Pärnu mnt, Tallinn

I’m studying leather design at EKA (Estonian Academy of Arts) and there are so many stylish and innovative people there. I do most of my shopping abroad, for example in Helsinki, because there is more to choose from. I wear a lot of blue and I guess this has become sort of my favourite colour. I’m not a big fan of jewellery. I do wear earrings, but no necklaces and bracelets.

Egon,
Müürivahe Str, Tallinn

I lived in London for a while, but now I’m back in Tallinn. It is difficult to get used to the local street style again. In London I loved Brick Lane area, because of its style and vibe.
My own style is mainly skinny jeans, pointy shoes and leather jackets- very relaxed, yet stylish. I just saw a great oversized long coat at the USA second-hand at Juurdeveo street. I like unusual shapes.

Artur,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

I’m not a big fan of mixing clashing prints. I like to wear clothes in just one colour at the time, e.g. today I’m wearing only white. I prefer to buy from places that are unknown to other people.
Estonians tend to concentrate on just one detail and the overall look is awful. You may have your favourite items, yet if they look bad together, it is time to update your look.

Pipu,
Viru str, Tallinn

There are 3 types of Estonians: ones, who wear whatever they have, then these ‘Zara and H&M people’, who wear whatever is sold in places like that and then ‘original’ people, who, unfortunately, most of the time still look the same.
I’m a very positive and happy person and I hope my appearance reflects that. My favourite colour is electric blue. I like to mix new things with my grandparents’ clothes. This briefcase used to belong to my grandfather and this ring was my grandmother’s.

Ingmar,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

Films affect me a lot, my current favourites are ones from the 40’s and a recent one called La Môme about Edith Piaf’s life. I have always been into vintage and old-school styles, but I tend to mix them with something really modern, for example an old cardigan and trousers with some new Nike sneakers. I’m currently looking for a slightly militaristic coat similar to ones worn during the II World War.

Helina,
Tammsaare’s Park, Tallinn

I like to customize and make my clothes. These shoes used to be black, but I never wore them until I painted them with spray colours. I just made this dress also. I mix very different styles and one day I’d like to pursue a career in fashion. I’m currently inspired by 50’s pin-up girls and dancing. It is very important to feel the vibe of your clothes; otherwise you won’t be comfortable in them.

Kirill,
Stereo, Tallinn

This autumn is all about different shades of grey, but as I love colour too, I always wear colourful details. My other favourites are these vintage trousers from the sixties and dark blue colour. I also love hats – a cool one can transform a boring outfit into something really stylish. This winter I hope to see a lot of experimenting with them
.

Ženja,
Harju str, Tallinn

I’d like to find some great boots for this winter, maybe a pair from real deerskin. Today’s theme at Fashion Avenue is From Russia with Love and I think you could update your wardrobe based on that too. Russian kitsch and glamour is something that can always be inventive.

Keiu,
Viru Centre, Tallinn

I’m wearing this fur coat, because one of my friends stole all my jackets, but as the weather is quite awful it is a great choice. My favourite colour is black and I’m looking for a latex coat in that colour. Katariina Padar and Heidy Purga are probably the most stylish Estonians, who always look very inventive and put together.
